IIT Bombay suicide: Condolence meeting held; committee formed to investigate incident
IIT Bombay organised a gathering to express condolences next to the campus' main administrative building on Monday, one day after a student there committed suicide. The meeting honouring Darshan Solanki, a first-year B Tech student in the Chemical Engineering department, was attended by a number of students, staff members, and administrators.
"Today, the Institute conducted a meeting to express condolences, during which two minutes of silence were observed in honour of the deceased. Although we cannot undo what has already occurred, we will continue to do our best efforts to stop similar incidents from happening in the future, the institute stated in a statement released shortly after the condolence gathering. A committee has been established to look into the occurrence, it was also said.
IIT Bombay stated, "It is sad that such a loss could not be avoided despite the Institute and Student Mentors' best efforts to assist our pupils.
On Sunday afternoon, Solanki, 18, a resident of Hostel 16 on campus, committed himself by jumping from the hostel structure. First-year students at IIT Bombay finished their end-of-semester exams on Saturday (February 11). Many students now suspect that academic pressure is a factor in suicide as a result of this. An institute representative, though, said that it wouldn't be proper to correlate until additional information was available.
On Sunday night, Dastak, a loosely organised group of students from the university, planned a candlelight march and subsequent assembly in a common area next to dorms 12, 13, and 14.
Most first-year students live in Hostel 16, where the incident happened on Sunday afternoon.
